LUZERNE FOUNDATION GRANTS ASSIST IN FLOOD RECOVERY

$310,000 Donated to Area Nonprofits

The Luzerne Foundation has presented grants totaling $310,000 to area nonprofits to provide financial assistance for their flood recovery efforts. Because of the generosity of caring friends and donors, the organizations receiving funds are: The American Red Cross Wyoming Valley Chapter $175,000, The American Red Cross Greater Hazleton Chapter $25,000, the Salvation Army of Wyoming Valley $20,000, Catholic Social Services $10,000, Volunteers of America $10,000 and the Luzerne County Flood Recovery Fund for Business $70,000.

“The Luzerne Foundation is uniquely positioned, as a community foundation, to connect our donors and friends with critical community needs, “notes Charles Barber, President and CEO. “Their charity helped fund these grants from The Foundation and many others have made direct donations after contacting us for information.”

Commenting on the grant to the Luzerne County Flood Recovery Fund for Business, Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Donna Sedor states, "A critical need is for funding to help companies rebuild and retain jobs in our region. The Luzerne Foundation was right there working with us to find a way to create a fund designed to help small businesses re-open their doors, re-employ workers and re-establish themselves." The $70,000 grant from The Luzerne Foundation to the Luzerne County Flood Recovery Fund for Business is designated for immediate needs ($20,000) and for a challenge grant program which will match donations on a one-to-one basis up to $50,000.

“Charles Barber was the first person to visit our flooded building and the very next day The Luzerne Foundation was the first to offer financial assistance,” noted Bill Jones, COO of Volunteers of America. “We are very grateful for The Luzerne Foundation’s support. It arrived at a critical time and has helped us in moving towards a full recovery and continuing our mission in the community.”

“We thank our donors and friends who have made this support possible, but there are still vast outstanding needs related to this disaster and the long-term recovery,” stated Barber. “We encourage everyone across our community to add their assistance, in whatever manner possible, so that our community can quickly recover and grow.”
